How to Make your Eyelashes Grow Longer and Stronger
Jujube (Zizyphus jujuba)
Jujube was first cultivated in China for thousands of years before it reached the United States in the late 1800s. It goes by the names jujubes, Korean dates, Indian dates, Chinese dates, and red dates.
There's a lack of medical studies in humans that confirm its effectiveness as an eyelash grower. However, an animal study has shown that jujube essential oil at 1% to 10% concentration stimulates hair growth. [1] Eating red dates with honey and 3 to 5 drops of apple cider vinegar for 3 months could help with spot balding, according to an online testimonial.
You can also use the essential oil extracted from the seeds of jujube. Just be really careful. As you may know, essential oils are highly irritating if used undiluted (which is a big no-no).
To use its essential oil, add 3 drops to 2 teaspoons of any light carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil. Then apply thinly on your eyelashes using a cotton swab or mascara brush.
So far, there are no known side effects of jujube since there's a lack of clinical trials in humans. Eat it in moderation because it contains fruit sugar.
Virgin Coconut Oil
If you can't find jujubes from where you live, use virgin coconut oil instead. It stimulates hair growth and repairs damaged hair by preventing further protein loss. These might be the reasons people use it to keep their eyelashes strong and healthy.
Virgin coconut oil stands out from the rest of natural oils because of its components and structure. It's abundant in lauric acid which closely resembles your hair proteins. It also has a straight chain molecular structure which is able to penetrate deep inside your eyelashes to nourish them from the inside and out. [2]
Virgin coconut oil is simple to use. Just dab a small amount of this oil onto your eyelashes from root to tip.
Balanced Diet and Vitamins
Deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals could make your eyelashes brittle and thin which in turn leads to premature shedding. Here are some vitamins that might help make your eyelashes grow longer and stronger:
- Vitamin B5 deeply moisturizes your eyelashes' hair follicles by attracting moisture from the atmosphere. By doing so, it prevents your eyelashes from prematurely falling off.
- Deficiency of biotin, also called vitamin H, is often associated with weight gain and hair loss. In otherwise healthy individuals, this vitamin makes eyelashes grow longer and thicker by improving blood circulation to the eyelids' hair follicles. It also improves absorption of carbs, fats, and amino acids which your body needs in order to maintain your eyelashes' health.
- Vitamin E supports hair and eyelash health by fighting the detrimental effects of excess free radicals. It eases inflammation, enhances blood flow, and repairs your hair follicles. Some foods rich in this vitamin are spinach, avocados, almonds, and sunflower seeds.
To use it topically, add the content of one vitamin E capsule to 2 teaspoons of olive oil or other light natural oil. Dip a clean cotton swab or mascara brush into the mixture, and then gently comb through your eyelashes from root to tip.
There are no conclusive studies to support the use of these vitamins for increasing the length and thickness of your eyelashes, so please consult your doctor first to confirm any deficiency. It's good to take note that taking these in excessive amounts could actually cause your eyelashes or hair to shed.
Raw Sweet Almond Oil
Raw sweet almond oil is one of the most versatile oils out there. It's easily absorbed, so it can deeply nourish and moisturize your eyelashes to prevent them from falling off easily. It's a great source of calcium, vitamin E, monosaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and magnesium.
Using this for eyelash growth is not a rocket science. Just apply it directly to your eyelids using a small mascara brush or cotton swab. That's it. Do this every single night for 4 to 12 weeks to see significant results.
Gotu Kola
Gotu kola, the rejuvenating herb, is widely used as a hair grower and anti-inflammatory agent in many traditional treatments. When combined with other ingredients like citric acid and L-arginine, a study shows it could make the eyelashes longer and grow in number. [3]
Like other herbal remedies, scientists didn't study gotu kola extensively, thus it doesn't have a standard dosage. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 50 to 250 milligrams of gotu kola extract can be taken thrice per day. While the tea is steeped for up to 15 minutes and is generally consumed 3 cups daily.
Gotu kola rarely causes any side effects. If it does, some of its possible side effects are itching, swelling, stomachache, drowsiness, and nausea.
Other Tips For Stronger And Longer Eyelashes
- Avoid plucking your eyelashes. Some people may want to pluck the eyelashes in order to get the dirt out of the lashes. Don't do that. Simply wash your lashes with water and massage them gently with your fingers.
- Remove makeup at night. It is important to clean your lashes from makeup and eyeliner at night. Otherwise, it may make you lose eyelashes.
- Clean your eyelashes every day. Cleaning your eyelashes every day helps to keep the lashes stronger and eyes nice and fresh looking. This will also help the lashes to grow longer. Clean your eyelashes twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. Dirt makes your lashes weaker and leads to an eyelash loss.
Is There a Surefire Way to Make Eyelashes Grow Longer and Stronger?
So far, there are limited choices for eyelash treatments that are expert approved and proven by science. One of these is bimatoprost or Latisse (brand name). It used to be a glaucoma medicine, but its manufacturers repurposed it when they discovered its side effects: it makes eyelashes longer, darker, and thicker. [4] The only downside is it's a temporary solution.
Most of the solutions I've mentioned above may and may not work for you. It would also take three months on average before you would see results, so you would definitely need to be patient. I highly advise you talk to your healthcare provider before you take any nutritional supplements for aesthetic purposes only.
Have you used any of these treatments before? What worked best for you so far? Let me know your proven tips and tricks. I'd love to know your ideas on for stronger looking eyelashes.
